Day 2, Into Georgia

Submitted by Jeremy
on August 28, 2006 - 11:37am

Day 2 didn't get as nearly as far as we'd expected. We actually got a later start than day one (4pm, versus 2pm), and then spent a nice evening visiting my Aunt Helen in Georgia. We had noble plans of driving through Alabama and Mississippi before stopping, but saw a comfortable motel in central Georgia which changed our plans.

Day 1

Five hours of driving the first day, felt like a lifetime. I guess it'll take us a while to get into the routine. We stopped in Jacksonville with my friends Alex and Elaina. Alex, from Russia, immediately brought out the Vodka, claiming it's good luck before any big trip. Sure enough, I'm feeling lucky today.

We're still figuring out our course for the rest of the trip. I-40 is sounding good at the moment.

It Begins

Only 6 days later than I'd planned, I'm finally setting out across the country. Far too much stuff, but living in one place for 7 years things seem to pile up. It will be an interesting trip, especially trying to make it work with the two cats and dog -- we gave them as much space as we could, but it's not a lot. We'll have to stop a lot and let them exercise. Haelo, the dog, is ecstatic because she loves to be close by. The cats are not enthused, already ready for it to be over and it hasn't even started yet.

Moving, Finally

It was nearly seven years ago, in the fall of 1999, when I moved from Alaska down to Florida. I had been intending to move to Seattle, but a strange turn of events got me a paid trip to Florida for a job interview which turned into a job. Always up for something new and different, I took it, planning to stay for a year or two. Now it's late 2006 and I own a house in Margate, Florida. I spent the last three years remodeling the house with my then-girlfriend, never quite happy in Florida (I don't enjoy this many people, this much concrete, this much heat, all with no nearby escape into nature), but never quite unhappy enough to find a way out, either.

KernelTrap: No Updates Through January 8'th

Submitted by Jeremy
on December 30, 2005 - 12:00am

I won't be posting updates to the KernelTrap front page through January 8'th as I'll be away on a short vacation. All the many tasks that have been keeping me too busy to maintain the site regularly the past few months are finally wrapping up, so the new year should see much more frequent updates again. Until then, be sure to visit the forums and journals which continue to be updated.

Hurricane Wilma

Submitted by Jeremy
on October 27, 2005 - 9:10am

Hurricane Wilma passed through and left quite a footprint, looks like I'll be offline for longer than I'd originally planned. We lost power before the eye of the storm passed over, and I heard today that we're not expected to have power restored until as late as November 22'nd! I spent the first couple of days helping neighbors remove trees that had fallen on and around their houses. Fortunately we personally didn't sustain much damage, only loosing our fence (pieces of which blow down with each hurricane, but this time which completely fell).

A cold front hit following the hurricane, so fortunately the temperature is nice and cold. Hopefully that will last a while, as obviously we don't have air conditioning.

KernelTrap: Infrequent Updates Into December

Submitted by Jeremy
on October 16, 2005 - 7:23pm

I will be making infrequent updates to KernelTrap for the next 3-4 weeks. During that time, the infrastructure behind KernelTrap will be makeing a few changes. For the past many months, we've been running on a server borrowed from Oregon State University's Open Source Lab [story]. Shortly, we will be migrating back to our own server, still hosted in the wonderful Open Source Lab. The migration itself should be transparent. Beyond that, I will soon be making efforts to upgrade the site to the upcoming Drupal 4.7, bringing in many improvements over the currently running Drupal 4.5 release. Finally, I'll be taking advantage of this time to pursue long standing efforts to improve the functionality and layout of the site.

Though there will be only infrequent updates to the front page, don't forget that the KernelTrap forums remain active, including special Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, DragonFlyBSD, NetBSD, GNU/Hurd and hardware forums. As time permits, features will occasionally be posted to the front page, including an interview that I'm currently working on. By mid-November, I expect to be able to begin making more regular updates again.

Update: I'll be away through December 8'th, after which I'll finally resume posting updates to the front page.

Limited Updates Through July 10; Scheduled Outages

Submitted by Jeremy
on June 27, 2005 - 5:46am

I'll be mostly offline for the next couple of weeks, and therefore will not be making many updates to the KernelTrap front page. Furthermore, the server will have two scheduled outages in the next two weeks. The first is at 0830 UTC Wednesdasy, June 29th. The second is at 0830 UTC Sunday, July 3rd. Both outages will last for as much as 1.5 hours, and are necessary for upgrading the UPS in the server room that the KernelTrap server is housed. Sorry for the inconvenience, but the server will be brought back online as quickly as possible.

Speaking of the KernelTrap server, thanks to a number of generous donations I have been able to upgrade our server as planned. We have gone from two SCSI 18GB disks to two SCSI 70GB disks. We have also gone from 1GB of RAM to 2 GB of RAM. Full server details can be found here. Thank you again to all who donated!

Remember that the KernelTrap forums remain active (Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, DragonFlyBSD, GNU/Hurd, and more.) Additionally, the threaded mailing list archives are automatically updated every 15 minutes (Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, DragonFlyBSD, OGP, and more.). KernelTrap user blogs can also be found here.

KernelTrap: New Home At The Open Source Lab

Submitted by Jeremy
on May 6, 2005 - 5:32am

KernelTrap has found a new home with Oregon State University's Open Source Lab. Associate Director of the OSL, Scott Kveton explained, "the OSL staff were all avid readers of KernelTrap.org and we wanted to do something for this great site. In addition, we really wanted to help a kernel-related site that focuses on the community and community-related issues." Working with Scott and the others at the OSL has already proven to be a rewarding experience.

For the past two years, all colocation costs for KernelTrap have been generously donated by Danube Technologies, Inc.. Danube president, Laszlo Szalvay said, "it was a pleasure hosting KernelTrap for the past few years; we really enjoyed having them on board and are glad to help the open source community." Danube began providing flawless hosting for KernelTrap in August of 2003, however since that time they have refocused their energies, moving away from providing hosting. Laszlo explained, "Danube Technologies, Inc. provides software development services including staff augmentation, project outsourcing, and process mentoring and training." During the search for and later the implementation of our new hosting, Danube has remained excellent to work with.

KernelTrap: Server Migration

Submitted by Jeremy
on May 4, 2005 - 8:07pm

A migration of the KernelTrap webserver is in progress. You are currently accessing the new webserver. Please be patient as we complete the migration. Full details regarding the move will be posted soon. Until then, thanks to Danube Technologies for the past couple years of donated hosting, and thanks to Oregon State University's Open Source Labs for our current hosting.

Broken desktop

Submitted by Jeremy
on March 29, 2005 - 6:07am

I managed to hose my primary computer nicely a couple of days ago, trying to upgrade the gnome desktop from 2.8 to 2.10. With complete confidence, I neglected to keep my old installation around, and in my new installation nautilus and gnome-panel crash the moment they start. I've burned countless hours the past two days trying to solve the problem, but I'm at a complete loss. I'm about to the point of re-installing a distro (I was on an old Fedora Core 1 installation) to get a fresh start -- all my personal data is safely on the home partition. Quite frustrating, as I'm sure it's something silly, like linking against the wrong version of some library... I just don't know how to properly debug it.

KernelTrap: Infrequent Updates Through December 5'th

on November 18, 2004 - 6:08am

I'm going to be offline for the next few weeks, and there will be infrequent updates to this site until my return. The forums, kernel hacker journals and local blogs will remain active, so be sure to check beyond the front page. As always, you can get an overview of all new content at http://kerneltrap.org/all.
