It looks like block major number 48 is the Mylex DAC960 which I really doubt you have so that's probably just the last thing tried.

I really doubt you'll ever get RH9 running on a machine with a SATA disk, at least not without a whole lot of work. If I were you I'd get a copy of the free VMWare Server an put RH9 in there, it'll be a lot simpler and you won't have to worry about dual-booting.

block major number 0x48 = 72 is the Compaq Intelligent Drive Array, first controller, which doesn't help much either

RH9 is really old, can't you use something newer?

He wants to use the most popular Linux

At some point (1995?), the concept of "if it doesn't work don't use it" was lost as things being broken became expected behavior in the Windows world. I don't think the concept of picking a distro. based on it actually working is a part of a Windows user's thought process.

They probably don't want to use Linux at all but their boss told them they have to (for some project where they are planning to build a proprietary closed-source product and violate the GPL), so after he gets RH9 installed the next post will be "Hi, I have large project due tomorrow using RH9 can you tell me exactly how to do it in 5 minutes so I do not have to waste the time with learning this Linux?". Also, the boss probably selected RH9, that's how most large organizations work is the non-technical people who know nothing make all the important technical decisions.
