SATA/SAS controller - hardware advice

Hello everybody,

since my onboard marvell sata controller is not well supported (as I understand it marvell isn't handing out any specs and such) I'm in search of an replacement controller for my sata disks. And this time I wanted to ask beforehand which one is working nicely with the current kernel.

A bit on the background: a while ago I bought an ASUS P5BV-C/4L mainboard with two sata controllers onboard - one is the intel ICH7 SB and one the marvell 6145. The latter of which isn't playing well with the current kernel. Under heavy load I it looses the devices and fails to identify them afterwards. The intel controller on the other hand is working just fine (apart from the usual timeout errors when accessing smart-data).

My requirements for the new controller are as follows:

  • it should work reliable with the current kernel (that is using ahci mode)
  • sata or better jet an sas controller
  • have at least 4 (internal) ports (better 8)
  • doesn't need to have a neat RAID feature set as I'm not using raid
  • with an PCIe x4 or x8 interface
  • should not cost above 400$

Does such a device exist on the market? And what are your expieriences with sata/sas controllers under linux?

Best regards

Matthias

I did some digging and realised the sas controllers don't really use ahci that much (or at all?), so ahci is just for the onboard consumer-market? Well anyway my current canditate to subsitute the marvell onboard controller is the Intel SASUC8I. It has 8 sas/sata2 ports and should run with the mptsas kernel driver (since it features the LSI SAS1068E chip). My question now would be: are there any known issues with this particular controller and the current kernel?

Consider the P400. I faced certain issues with the firmware version it shipped with (probably irrelevant nowadays), but ever since I upgraded I'm very satisfied with its performance and stability.
