Ok i am trying to monitor packets on my home network and the only way i can seem to monitor packets is if i run a Cat5 cable from the router or modem to my computer and then with my 2nd NIC run another cable to the other computer and have that computer get the internet through my computer.

BASICALLY what i was wondering is if there was a way to see the packets that are going through my entire network.

I tried running the connection from the modem to my computer and then out to the router and everything works fine BUT i cant seem to read the packets that are going through.

Any Ideas?

how did you setup your monitoring? what software switches/options/ports/anything did you use to get the data, did you have separate subnets or anything? What exactly is the difference between your two setups? There are solutions to any problem, but some are not pretty.
