I will be making infrequent updates to KernelTrap for the next 3-4 weeks. During that time, the infrastructure behind KernelTrap will be makeing a few changes. For the past many months, we've been running on a server borrowed from Oregon State University's Open Source Lab [story]. Shortly, we will be migrating back to our own server, still hosted in the wonderful Open Source Lab. The migration itself should be transparent. Beyond that, I will soon be making efforts to upgrade the site to the upcoming Drupal 4.7, bringing in many improvements over the currently running Drupal 4.5 release. Finally, I'll be taking advantage of this time to pursue long standing efforts to improve the functionality and layout of the site.
Though there will be only infrequent updates to the front page, don't forget that the KernelTrap forums remain active, including special Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, DragonFlyBSD, NetBSD, GNU/Hurd and hardware forums. As time permits, features will occasionally be posted to the front page, including an interview that I'm currently working on. By mid-November, I expect to be able to begin making more regular updates again.
Update: I'll be away through December 8'th, after which I'll finally resume posting updates to the front page.
For the next few weeks, most of my effort will be going towards finishing up the remodeling of my house, which I plan to put on the market by November 1'st. Once the house sells, the plan is to buy a sailboat. I'm gearing up to continue to be productive from the boat, but it all takes a lot of effort and time, hence the infrequent updates to KernelTrap.
If you experience any problems during the updates and changes to the site over the next few weeks, please post a comment here or drop me an email at jeremy@kerneltrap.org.
drupal 4.7
So, Jeremy, what are the features in drupal 4.7 that are going to make a difference on kerneltrap.org? Just curious.
Oh, and... happy sailing! ;-)
re: drupal 4.7
Perhaps most important, Drupal 4.5 will no longer be officially supported once 4.7 is out the door, so upgrading will be necessary to continue to keep current with security updates.
Beyond that, much of the improvements are behind the scenes, such as better performance and additional administrative functionality. You should see much visible change.
For a list of actual changes, you can view the Drupal changelog.

BTW, one change I'd like to see is the "post" button go with the previewed content, and the "preview" button go with the editing text-area. Putting both side-by-side and having an error page is unnecessarily confusing.
re: one change I'd like
I assume you're referring to the fact that if you type a comment and press preview, now there's a 'preview' and a 'post' button. If you make changes to your comment, the 'post' button will generate an error because you haven't previewed your changes?
This is a hack I added that blocks auto-posting spam scripts that were flooding the site. I improved this spam-prevention method and submitted a patch that is in Drupal 4.7, so indeed that confusion will go away when I upgrade.

Ok, cool. On some sites, they have preview and post buttons on the preview page, but the post button is next to the previewed content and will simply post whatever it is you previewed last. I'm guessing that's not as effective of a filter, given your comment above.

Wow. Did this site ever have frequent updates!?
Define frequent
If you want frequent as in slashdot, where there is a rush for obscene first posts and no real discussion or thought as to the articles posted... no.
Kerneltrap I think is notable for really good interviews, good articles of features from other (not Linux) kernels, and generally well thought out content that is paced well enough to have meaningful discussions.
Remember though: you can always submit articles and other content yourself.
Hot grits.
Imagine a beowulf cluster of kerneltrap.org's!

Ready for new content...
Today is the 11th Jeremy. That makes it 3 days after the 11th. We're still waiting for your great kernel development coverage...
Re: Ready for new content...
Yes, we are eagerly waiting...
Here is a linux-kernel thread to start with: Linux in a binary world... a doomsday scenario

You ever try to distill LKML the way Jeremy does? Going away for 2 months means there's probably 30-40MB of LKML backlog to parse through for interesting bits.

Have you ever tried to distill LKML the way Jeremy does? After being away for 2 months, he probably has a 30-40MB of LKML backlog to parse through for interesting bits.

Thanks
Thanks. Hopefully things will stay mellow for a while, it's been a busy couple of months. I don't think I accomplished any of the things I'd been planning during my absence, so it goes.
