There are four main types of content found on KernelTrap: stories, forum discussions, blogs, and comments

- Stories:
Stories are what generally make it to the KernelTrap front page. Only site moderators and administrators can post stories.

- Discussion forums:
Interesting discussions from the forums will occasionally be moderated up to the front page, however the majority of them won't. The forums are divided into a very large number of categories. First, find the appropriate forum, then start a new discussion by clicking the 'create a new forum topic' link. Or, click the link then select an appropriate topic from the drop down menu. Only users can create new forum topics.

- Blogs:
Interesting blog entries will occasionally be moderated up to the front page, however the majority of them won't. When submitting a blog, please choose the appropriate category. Your blog does not have to be related to kernels or kernel development in any way. You can add blog entries here. You must be logged in as a user to submit a blog entry.

- Comments:
Comments can be posted in regards to any of the above types of content. You do not have to be logged in as a user to post a comment. Users can moderate comments, thus filtering out rude or otherwise innappropriate comments. Users can also modify their own comments, so long as no-one has replied to their comment yet.
