It's probably obvious to many admins out there, but today I learned first hand. If you've got an SFTP / SCP sessions that starts out quick and slows down radically after a short time, you've probably got a duplex mismatch between your server and your network switch.

So what's gone on since the Winprinter stuff? Not much. I've been meaning to give my condo a good cleaning, but it's never quite happened. I don't really have a good excuse. I *did* manage to replace the six burned out bulbs in the bathroom vanity. They were those big clear globes, and they're kind of expensive in most stores ($3-4 each). Big Lot's had them for $1 each, and in a much less retina burning 40 watt size.

Theo de Raadt announced the official release of OpenBSD 3.8 with significant improvements in nearly all areas of the system. OpenBSD 3.8 can be downloaded from the project's ftp mirror sites.

You can grab unofficial, and of course unsupported OpenBSD 3.8 install ISO images from Hungarian Unix Portal.

This is going to be primarily a geeky post, so I'll keep the non-geeky stuff to the top so you don't have to read it if you don't want to. In non-geeky news, the recent Clutch album is hella good. Well, it's not exactly new, but it's still damn good. "The Incomparable Mr. Flannery" might be my favorite song. The line "Stole my Camaro, primer gray" kills me every time. Damn, I miss my butt-rock Camaro sometimes.

Just upgraded to dovecot 1.0alpha3 on the mail machine (which is an OpenBSD box). It seems weird that the author considers it *the* version to use, yet won't remove the alpha tag. You'd think it'd be a beta. Anyway, had a few growing pains in the config file (the new one doesn't care for some of the old config options) so I had to take the example config for the new dovecot and bring it up to speed. The biggest thing I found once it was up and running was with mailbox locking....I had to add the group that owned /var/mail to the mail_extra_groups line.

I'm in Portland with Flint right now....we came here yesterday to visit Nate and Christina. Last night we went to the movies and watched "March of the Penguins," which is a documentary about Emperor penguins in Antarctica. Being the big Linux fan that I am, of course I *had* to watch a penguin documentary. It was very cool; I recommend watching it.

After being a lump on Penny and Travis's couch for a bit, I finally got out and started doing stuff. Rhiannon and I went to go see Undead Eulogy (Greg's new band)play in Tacoma. They get better every time I see them. I got a 3 song demo CD from him, but unfortunately, it doesn't have "Kitty," which is my favorite song.

It's been too long since I've blogged...tons of stuff has happened. I think it'd be therapeutic if I took some time to write about that stuff as it's happening but I just haven't.

First off, I've been having email screwage, both at work and for the home domain. I had to scramble at the last minute to transfer stuff on my personal domain, as my friend Dave's last day at work was Friday, and I still hadn't gotten it together yet as far as transferring mail and web stuff over. So, friday, I was scrambling to do that stuff, while still struggling a little bit with an unfamiliar operating system (OpenBSD). Of course, I bought a great book about OpenBSD, but now I can't find it after searching high and low. Having said that, I'm gaining more and more respect for OpenBSD. It ships with a decently configured sendmail and a chrooted Apache by default, which rules. The ports system and "pkg_add" are great. Really, the only things I need to learn more about are the startup scripts, which are different.

OpenBSD creator Theo de Raadt has announced the release of the OpenBSD 3.7. Read the announcement here. You can o.r.d.e.r install media here or you are able to access 3.7 stuff via FTP.

Some tarball on ftp.openbsd.org, in i386 snapshots directory seems corrupted. MD5 sums of packages are not match with the official MD5 file.

I heard that song "Float On" by Modest Mouse on the Sirius box twice tonight. Normally I tire of big pushed commercial stuff pretty quickly, but there is just something about that song that makes me like it more every time I hear it. A few months ago, Lisa bought the 45 of it, so I guess I should crank up the record player. I love that line about the "fake Jamaican." The singers whacko singing style and the guitar are cool too.

I'm spending this afternoon trying to install OpenBSD 3.4 on my Sun Ultra 1. It doesn't have a CDROM, and I really don't want to set up netbooting stuff (tftpd and other stuff) on my router, so I was trying to boot off of the floppy. I keep getting ".Inode not directory" and the standard MMU barf message (I don't remember the exact wording). Since CD and Netbooting are out, and the floppy doesn't seem to be liking things, I guess that leaves miniroot installation.

I first setup a personal ftp-mirror on a spare Linux-machine. I had some trouble getting to installer find the files; after a while a discovered that it searches for all the files in 'lowercase' and the files on the cd are in 'uppercase'. A small script (Tweaky User - cudeso) did the
